Metal detecting maps for Denmark

A detecting map isn't one map but several layers stacked together — each with its own answer to where you should search. LiDAR shows the terrain, historical maps show the past, the aerial photo shows the present, and parcel boundaries and protected zones show whom to ask and where you can't dig. Here are the layers a good detecting map is made of, what each one tells you, and how they work together in the field.

What is a detecting map?
There's no single "detecting map" you can look up. What a detectorist calls their map in practice is a stack of map layers — each with its own purpose — that you switch on and off over one another. Some point you to promising ground; others keep you on the right side of the rules. The strength is in having them in one place, so you can go from "where does it look promising?" to "what should I check before searching here?" without switching maps.
The layers you need
LiDAR terrain
A hillshade of the bare earth — the terrain with trees and vegetation stripped away. It reveals barrows, hollow ways and old field boundaries the aerial photo hides, and can even show terrain under woodland. Read more in our guide to LiDAR maps. Part of Muld+.
Historical maps
The old survey sheets from the 1800s and early 1900s show vanished farms, abandoned roads, mills and place-names — places where people were, and where things could be dropped or left behind. See our guide to historical maps. Part of Muld+.
Aerial photos
The modern aerial photo is your starting point: it shows the ground as it looks right now — crops, plough lines and the marks in a field that can hint at something beneath. The aerial photo is free in Muld; older years are part of Muld+.
Parcel boundaries
Cadastral parcel boundaries draw the lines between properties, so you can see where one owner's land ends and the next begins — and therefore whom to ask for permission. If you're a landowner yourself, see our guide for landowners.

How to read the layers together
The layers are strongest together. A typical trip starts at home:
- Find promising ground on LiDAR and the historical maps — a rise in the terrain, a vanished farm, a telling place-name.
- Check the aerial photo for what's at the spot today — field, woodland or buildings.
- Switch on parcel boundaries and find out whose land it is, so you can ask permission.
- Look for protected zones, so you know where you can't dig.
By then you've gone from a map to a plan before you've even left home. None of the layers is a promise of finds — but together they're one of the best guides you can get.
